The Celtic Cross is the oldest and most widely used spread in tarot history. Ten cards are arranged in a cross and a staff formation, giving you a full, three-dimensional view of the situation — from the heart of the question to unconscious factors, past and future, and the final outcome.
The 10 Positions and Their Meanings
Card 1 – The Present Situation (The Heart of the Matter)
The central and most important card in the layout. It reveals the core energy the querent is experiencing right now, the nature of the situation, or the essence of the question. Every other card is interpreted in relation to this one.
Example: If someone wondering whether to change jobs draws The Chariot for Card 1, it signals strong momentum and goal-driven energy. The will to move forward is the defining force right now.
Card 2 – Challenges / Crossing Energy (The Crossing Card)
Placed horizontally across Card 1. This represents energy that is blocking or complicating the present situation. It is not necessarily negative — even a positive card can act as a complicating variable or source of friction.
Example: If Card 1 is The Chariot and Card 2 is The Moon, there is a strong drive to push forward, but ambiguity and inner fears are clouding the direction.
Card 3 – Root Cause / Foundation (The Foundation)
Placed below the cross. It represents the unconscious motivations or deep patterns at the root of the current situation — often forces the querent is unaware of that are shaping events behind the scenes.
Example: If Five of Cups appears at position 3 in a relationship reading, grief over past heartbreak or loss is unconsciously casting a shadow over the current relationship.
Card 4 – Recent Past (The Recent Past)
Placed to the left of the cross. It reflects events or influences from the past few weeks or months — the direct chain of events that led to the current situation. It answers the question: "How did we get here?"
Example: If The Hermit appears at position 4 for someone pondering a career shift, it suggests a recent period of solitude and inward searching for direction.
Card 5 – Best Possible Outcome / Conscious Goal (The Crown)
Placed above the cross. This represents what the querent consciously desires, or the most ideal outcome possible along the current path. It is sometimes called the "best case scenario" card.
Example: The Star at position 5 in a job-change reading suggests that the ideal outcome holds new hope, healing, and an inspired direction waiting ahead.
Card 6 – Near Future (The Near Future)
Placed to the right of the cross. It represents energy or events approaching in the coming days or weeks — things not yet arrived but already set in motion.
Example: Three of Wands at position 6 suggests a period of watching and waiting for results while new horizons come into view. Some news or opportunity will soon appear.
Card 7 – Self-Perception (The Self / Querent's Attitude)
The first card of the right-hand staff, starting from the bottom. It shows the querent's own attitude, beliefs, and fears about the situation — the mindset with which they are approaching it.
Example: King of Wands at position 7 means the querent sees themselves as a driven leader and is approaching the situation with courage and a desire to take charge.
Card 8 – External Influences (The Environment / Others' Perspective)
The second card of the staff. It represents external circumstances or how the people around the querent view the situation — factors outside the querent's direct control.
Example: Five of Swords at position 8 signals a conflicted, competitive environment. In a career reading, it could mean toxic power struggles in the organization are acting as external pressure.
Card 9 – Hopes and Fears
The third card of the staff, and one many readers find the most challenging to interpret. It simultaneously represents the querent's deepest hope and deepest fear. The key insight: hope and fear are often two sides of the same coin.
Example: The World at position 9 reflects a longing for completion and reaching the pinnacle — and at the same time, a fear of "Can I really pull this off?"
Card 10 – Final Outcome (The Outcome)
The topmost card of the staff and the conclusion of the entire reading. It shows the most likely destination if the current path continues. That said, this card is not a fixed destiny — shift the current energy and the outcome can shift too.
Example: Ten of Cups at position 10 points toward emotional fulfillment and deep satisfaction. Even in a career reading, it suggests that everything ultimately leads to abundance in life as a whole.
A Real Reading Example: "Should I Stay at This Job?"
A person in their 30s, five years into their current company, pulled a Celtic Cross to explore whether to leave.
- 1. Present — Eight of Cups: Emotionally already checked out. The core energy is the drive to move toward something more fulfilling.
- 2. Challenge — Four of Pentacles: Clinging to security and financial stability; fear of change is the main obstacle.
- 3. Foundation — Ace of Wands: Deep inside, a burning desire for new challenges and creative passion lies dormant.
- 4. Recent Past — Three of Swords: A recent experience of disappointment or betrayal — perhaps a missed promotion or internal conflict — was the catalyst.
- 5. Best Outcome — The Star: The ideal path ahead holds a hopeful new beginning and an inspired direction.
- 6. Near Future — The Fool: An opportunity or offer for a fresh leap is approaching soon.
- 7. Self — The High Priestess: Intuitively already knows the answer, but is afraid to trust that certainty.
- 8. Environment — Five of Swords: The workplace is competitive and conflict-ridden. Others can also feel that the environment is unhealthy.
- 9. Hopes & Fears — Ten of Pentacles: Desires long-term stability and abundance (hope), but fears losing that security (fear) — both present at once.
- 10. Outcome — Judgement: This moment is a turning point calling the querent to answer their true vocation. Not acting now risks long-term regret.
Summary: The querent has already emotionally left this job (Card 1), held back by financial anxiety (Card 2). But a new fire burns within (Card 3), and the external environment is also unhealthy (Card 8). The Judgement card says: "Now is exactly the moment."
Reading Order and Interpretation Tips
The Celtic Cross becomes much clearer when approached in three sections.
- Core Cross (Cards 1 & 2): What is happening right now — the heart of the situation and the challenge
- Background Pillar (Cards 3, 4, 5 & 6): The flow of past and future, the temporal context
- Inner/Outer Pillar (Cards 7, 8, 9 & 10): Internal and external perspectives, deepest hopes and fears, and the final outcome
Once the reading is complete, lay all the cards out together and try to connect them as a single story. If contradictory cards appear, that tension itself reflects the querent's current dilemma. The real power of the Celtic Cross lives in the narrative that ten cards weave together.
